Organized Move?

We are planning to put our home up for sale in April. We want to move after school is out. We are in a college town and fairly close to campus, so if we don't sell our townhouse in the spring or summer, it will be another year, so we really need to sell, soon.

So, I want to do this well. I have been in a great organizational/purging mood so this is a great time for me to work on organizing my house with moving in mind. Since I am pregnant, now is probably the best time to work on it. I have energy and time, now. Who knows what is coming??

Anyway, here are my thoughts on the subject:

--Anything I can do now, I don't have to do when I am huge. Or have thrown in a box randomly because I couldn't get to it.

--I want to get several large, plastic tote boxes and get myself organized. I figure if I do it for now, we can just move it like it is in the box and already be organized when we get there.

--I want to start collecting boxes now, since they are really hard to come by in May. (College town, graduation and moving!)

--I also want to start purging lots of our stuff. We are still recovering from pack-ratitis, so we have a lot of junk to go through. The less useless stuff I have to move and then deal with, the better.

--We need the house to look nice for buyers, so I'll be doing three-in-one by general organization, getting ready to sell and getting ready to move!

Do any of you have anything you've done (or wished you had) when you were getting ready to move? I can take all the organizational advice you've got!

I'll still Kim's thunder and tell you what her dh does. He puts things in boxes, labels the box not only with what is in it, but also a number and then makes a computer printout of the box numbers and their contents. That way, when you are up to your ears in boxes, you can look at your list and see that box number 54 has that frying pan in it that you are looking for. I've never done it, but I want to every time because I hate opening a box a year later and saying, "That's where it went!"

Also, do as much now as possilble, like you say. You'll be grateful.

Good luck on the move and the pregnancy.

And happy more snow day to you!

Last time we moved I did what Deedee said. It was wonderful! I put the number and then the room the box was destined for on the outside of the box- and then the contents on my list.

Start checking KSL.com and Craigslist for boxes. Great places to find free ones.

Start now with stuff you won't need until after you move, books, summer clothing, extra linens, food storage, holiday decor etc.

I spraypainted a colored dot on each box. Then I had pieces of paper coordinating with the dots for what rooms they went in. That way the people helping us move, knew exactly which room to put everything in. (I also put signs in the hallway with, for instance, a red dot and an arrow for where the room was) The other thing I did, was number the boxes that I needed/wanted opened right away in each room as 1,2,3... etc. That way I knew to make Emily feel at home, open the pink dotted box with a number one and she was SET! Hope that helps some!

I would just put "girl's rm" in marker on the box and then clothes, toys, blankets. Also if you have access to an LDS Cannery they break down a ton of those #10 can boxes and those are nice for books and heavier things because they don't hold as much.

Somehow I didn't realize this was your blog (I've only been checking out the crochet one) oops!
