I don't want to alarm anyone, so before you read on, make sure you are sitting down. Oh, wait, you probably are, since you're at a computer.
Okay, now that you aren't going to fall over with shock I'll admit to my strangeness.
When I was 7 or 8 I voluntarily decided to stop eating chocolate. I know, what was I thinking? Well, I was a bit fanatical as a child and I had learned that chocolate had caffeine in it. (I've since learned that it isn't actual caffeine, just similar.) I didn't want to have any caffeine, since my church discouraged it. So, even though the rest of my family ate it, I refused.
I didn't eat any chocolate (unless you count the time that my loving brother shoved some through my teeth just for fun--I don't) until I was in high school. The funniest thing is that I got said chocolate from a seminary (early morning scripture class) teacher. As I got answers correct, the chocolate was thrown at me--literally. I debated whether I should eat it and later in the day I did.
I was hooked! I eat chocolate for a while and then (I don't remember why.) I tried to stop eating it. It was so hard. As a kid, I didn't have any trouble abstaining, but after I'd had some later in life, I couldn't stop eating it. I was addicted.
It actually made me think (in a small way) about addiction. If you never taste alcohol, drugs, cigarettes or anything else that people become addicted to, you aren't tempted by them. Once you have tried them, it is so much harder to stop.
I now eat chocolate, but I still don't like chocolate cake or ice cream. I think it just isn't chocolaty enough for me. I want rich, creamy milk chocolate!!!

I betcha Denali's Bear Tracks ice cream is chocolatey enough!
I've all but given up on chocolate. It upsets my tummy. :(
I have never been a big chocolate fan. It tastes dirty to me. Plus there always seemed something wrong with the way women talked about it like a drug (this is my childhood memory). I agree with your last thought. It is why I've never even taken a sip of coffee, I know if I did I would be hooked.
WHA---?!? You WHA--?!?
WHY?
Okay, yeah, you explained why, but there are limits to what you ought to do for religion these days, you know. Like animal sacrifice, celibacy, and abstaining from chocolate.
I'm glad you came around in the end, but whoa, girl. No chocolate? Whooooooa.
