Why, Oh, Why? (Please love me anyway!)

Why is it that as I was sitting at a park day with friends does one of them have to bring up politics? Especially, HER?

Why do I have to read and mostly enjoy a book, but really and truly hate it, when everyone else seems to think it's been written by a wonderful author?

Okay, so maybe this isn't the most positive post, but I want to get this out anyway!

On Friday, I was sitting with some friends and one of them asked what we all thought of Sarah Palin. Immediately, all of them except for two (one who doesn't keep up with politics and me) gushed about how much they love her! They really didn't talk much about her politics, but more about her attitude and the fact that she is a mom. They were of course all moms, but that is hardly a reason to vote for someone. I honestly think Sarah Palin is about the last person I want to be in line to be president! (If you haven't seen it already, go read this. This is worth reading, too.) Honestly, someone who is that controlling and manipulative is seriously looking like a fascist, to me.

So, I didn't say anything, but I really wanted to.

And on to the book. I just finished reading Breaking Dawn, by Stephenie Meyer. To start, I did read it in three days, so I enjoyed it. But... when I even think about it a little bit, I hate some of the things she did with it. I think my biggest complaint is that she wrote these books for teenage girls. There are things that are grossly inappropriate for girls to be reading. They don't need to think that life it the way it is painted in this book. I know, I know, it's just a story, and furthermore, it's written about vampires, but still. There is way to much s*x, too much of the idea that "life will be better after this horrible life I'm living" and too much emphasis placed on how beautiful they become and how that makes Bella feel so much better about herself. We are all human and teenagers hate enough things about themselves to have these ideas put into their heads. I understand the need for an escape...what do you think reading this book provided me? I just think that Ms. Meyer takes things too far. While I'm at it, there are so many better books written for that age that are SO much better. There are better writers that don't take twice as long to say something as they need!

Okay, I'm done. I hope you all still love me...oh and I'm really not a left-wing Democrat or anything. I just have more moderate views and the Republicans are trying to be so far right at the moment that it really irritates me!

I'm not a Twilight fan, either.

Still love you - I do think the twilight books are really written to the teenagers still inside middle-aged women, unfortunately they are marketed to a much younger audience. They are sort of like a wreck on the freeway - people have to look and see what it's all about. I did read the series and I agree with you on how sad it is that Bella bases her worth on her new gracefulness and good looks. I also did not get why she had to drink blood - wouldn't an IV have worked, it's not like the baby could taste what she was eating. (I know, nitpicky of me)

As far as Sarah Palin goes, if they were going to pick a woman, I'm glad it's one who at least seems to have family values rather than one who has a 'token' child. I do not agree with her extreme pro-life position (there are a few, very rare, circumstances where choice should be an option).

Sorry, I should probably not be discussing politics or reading material in your comments, but isn't that what keeps life interesting? I enjoy other people's points of view, even if I disagree with them. :)

Hmmm... Well i have to say i agree and disagree with you when it comes to the Twilight series. i am right with you about the self image thing 100% however i disagree in part about the intamacy part. let me first say i think these books are more age appropriate for let say 17/18 year olds then younger. BUT... lets not forget that the characters were married and it is my hope that my children understand that that kind of intamacy is important in a marriage (not THE most important but important still) and that it should be understood in a positive light. It was hard for me when i first got married to change my views on intamacy in just a matter of minutes because i rarely heard the postive side. just my thought i obviously hope not to offend or upset anyone!

Hey--you have a perfect right to your own opinion. And you have an opinion to voice it! And good for you for not agreeing with everyone else just because.

About Palin: "someone who is that controlling and manipulative is seriously looking like..." a politician. I've got my own views about politics, and I mostly keep 'em to myself...but one of them is that anyone who WANTS to run for president is six shades of crazy in the first place. Another one is that it nearly doesn't matter WHO gets in to office. The president is just a figurehead and a scapegoat. (Why do people get so fired up about politics, anyway? Can't we get that excited about something else? Like, oh...whether or not Martha Stewart is an alien?)

And Twilight series--yeah. Definitely yeah. But if you're going to worry about girls thinking "that life is the way it is painted in this book" you better not leave out the fact that newborns CAN'T communicate, DON'T sleep, and most moms don't have a crazily-worshipful legion of babysitters at their disposal. That, right there, is what cemented the fact that it is completely and utterly a fantasy, and should not be taken seriously!

(And you can always steer your own daughters--when the time comes--to better books. There are plenty!)

Mrs. Organic,

"Token child?" Really? You'd make the number of children the key to getting your vote?

I fail to see how the number of children equates directly to "family values." Besides, it isn't a choice between Clinton and Palin, it's a choice between McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden. Check a little closer -- the Democrats are fine family men. Besides, I think standing by one's husband in the face of adultery, as Clinton did, is a very strong case for claiming she has "family values."

If the number of the children is the key to being a fine person with family values, allow me to persuade you to vote for Warren Jeffs.

Anon - People value different things in candidates. I can identify with a woman who has five children, one of whom is disabled.

Just identifying with someone doesn't qualify them for my vote, but it sure gets me interested in what they have to say. You may even feel the same way about Hillary and identify with her on some level - that's great. The important thing is that you are interested and involved in the process.

I don't really want to get into her motivations for *standing* by her man - the only person who really knows what they are is Hillary.
