I don't want to Induce this time

I had an OB appointment yesterday. The baby is head down and things are moving along.

We talked about inducing as well as striping the membranes. I really don't want to induce this time, but my doc is worried that I'll have a ten-pound baby (since my others were 9.5 and 9 lbs) and all of the problems that go with that. With my other two deliveries, I had to have Pitocin when they were late. I hate all of the sitting in the hospital and being tied to an IV. I'd love to spend the first several hours at home and then go in when the baby is ready. I've also heard it is more painful that way and that there are risks.

At the same time, if I am going to hit my due date (on a Friday) and then induce on the next Monday, why not just induce earlier and not have to be pregnant any long than is needed!

I am wondering what any of you did at home to help things along. I have read about a lot of home inducing remedies, but I am wondering if you tried anything that actually worked! (Also, how horrible is having your membranes stripped? It sounds awful to me!)

Thanks!

I had Becca 10 days after her due date. My doctor never induces until you're two weeks late, preferring the baby to come on their own if possible. I had pitocin with Emma and hated it of course, and personally would avoid it at all costs. Mostly just because I had such a hard time with Emma because of it, and Becca's delivery was easy to recover from. There's other possible reasons for that of course (Emma being my first and Becca my second), but I have a pretty staunch prejudice against pitocin and epidurals because of the experiences I had.

I think this is one area where you have the right to push for what you think is right, and you're entitled to personal revelation to find out what that is. Because it's different for everyone, it really is.

So far I have been induced with both kids, but mine are for medical reasons so I really don't have much choice in the matter. However, with my second, the prostaglandins they gave me ended up putting me into labor so I never had be on pitocin with that one.

I am not sure what will happen this time around since they plan on inducing even earlier because this little man is so large.

I say you stand up for what you believe is best for you and your body and your baby. How did you handle delivering a 9 1/2 pound baby? If you handled that well, couldn't you also handle a 10 pound one OK?

Can you get a second opinion?

I am a nurse, worked in OB 4 years. Stripping your membranes would just feel like an "agressive" pelvic exam. I know it feels like they are reaching for your tonsils anyway, but during this exam, they strech the cervix a little.

They did it to me on my second child at my morning appointment and I went into labor that night. I was able to labor at home and went to the hospital at 6 cm.

Blessings to you!

I had to have an emergency C-section with mine and will continue to with any others I have because I have freaky joint problems. Sometimes I wish it didn't have to be that way, but usually I'm just glad I don't have to go through labor again. No matter what you do just think that in the end you get a beautiful baby and that really the whole point, isn't it? That said, I agree with Kimberly. You have a right to personal choice and revelation here so do what you really believe is best for you and the baby.

Thanks for all of the comments. It is all such an individual thing and the point is to get a healthy baby! I guess I have 3 weeks to figure it out...unless this little gal wants to come early and that would be just fine with me...I wouldn't have to figure anything out!

Inductions are no fun. There are some great ways to TRY to get labor started, just run a Google search. Nipple stimulation, herbs (I'm using Black Cohosh), accupressure, intercourse, walking, spicy foods, even eggplant are recommended! I hope she appears for you soon - no induction required.

Ooo - also, because you've had big babies before, you have what is called a "proven pelvis" and the size of the baby really shouldn't been a big problem for you. My largest was 9lb 4 oz (emergency C section) but closely followed by 9lb 3 oz second child.
